About Us

The Helland Brothers Band

The Helland Brothers Band was founded during the fall of 2012, and consists of two regular members, the brothers Thore Eithun Helland and Frank Eithun Helland. On the first album two additional musicians have participated, Bjørn Otto Wallevik on percussion, and Stig Løberg Værnes, held to be one of the best contemporary rock drummers in Norway.  Stig also plays on our second album, Murky Dream.

The two of us have played together since childhood in bands like Travellin’ Band and Junkfood Junkies. In the beginning of the Eighties those bands were a part of the post punk movement. Only in our own municipality there were approximately twenty bands struggling to achieve local attention.

Our musical heritage comes from artists and bands from late Fifties, like Howling Wolf and Little Richard, to late Sixties and early Seventies, like Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Band and The Rolling Stones. Inspiration and influence comes as well from American revival bands from the late Eighties, like R.E.M., The Long Riders, Jason and the Scorchers and The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and not to forget the Americana bands and artists from the Nineties, like John Hiatt, Steve Forbert and The Jayhawks.

We write songs basicly for a four piece rock band, two guitars, bass and drums, but we like to explore the sound of additional instruments on many of the tracks. On our first album we added B3 organ, mandolin, dobro and harmonica. On our second album, Murky Dream, we have added the ukulele and the accordion as well.

At the present we have released two albums; Like a Soul Train, nov. 2013 and Murky Dream, des. 2014.  During the winter 2014-2015 we will start the recording our third album.
